Glass Bowls

Current Gallery

Bob's hand-blown bowls are all one-of-a-kind. They include color patterns that are lively and flowing, and organic shapes that are inspired by both the natural beauty of our coastal setting and the fluid nature of liquid glass.

Hand-blown bowls are made basically by blowing the standard sphere, and then performing a "transfer*" of the piece to a punty.** Once the piece is on the punty, the opening left from where the blowpipe was can be manipulated in various ways - for a bowl, it can gradually opened and eventually flared out into a bowl shape. But that only begins to explain the process!

* a "transfer" is where a piece is blown on the blowpipe, a solid rod (punty) is fused to the opposite end of the piece, and the piece is broken off the pipe to remain solely with the punty for further working

** a "punty" is a solid rod (actually, usually hollow, but with no opening on either end like the blowpipe has) used either to create solid glass pieces, or to gather small bits of molten glass for use with the primary piece
